There are more communication channels available to parents and schools with the prevalence of the internet ensuring parents can always be kept in the loop and more importantly can speak to the correct people in the event of as issue or a problem.

There are now so many organisations which have been founded to help parents and schools in the process of educating children and these are always willing to give advice. For those uncertain on a subject or would like help or advice these can be fantastic fonts of knowledge from which to draw from. They provide information and research papers online for people to read and are more than happy to engage in one on one discussions as it afford them an opportunity to preach about their own good work.

Universities have also realised that parents are large stakeholders in the students that they teach and are opening up new contact methods for parents. These allow parents to understand more about a university and what their child can expect. Students often choose universities based on extra-curricular activities such as the quality of the sports teams, or the intra-mural aspect of the university. It is important that these are balanced with actually undertaking the right course at the right university for the individual student.

This is where a careers advisor can be extremely useful as a point of contact. They are in a position where they should know the student personally and be able to help provide options which the individual may not have had the energy to research themselves.
